Dr. Fishel helps a patient into some equipment

Founded by Dr. Sam White, the practice is the oldest private optometric practice in Greenville. Dr. White first began seeing patients in downtown Greenville in 1951. Dr. Fishel continues that same level of personal care to her patients that can only be found in a private practice.

Dr. Jennifer Fishel

Dr. Jennifer Fishel is the owner of Jennifer Fishel, O.D., P.A.; a continuation of the oldest optometric practice in Greenville, NC. Dr. Fishel graduated from University of Alabama Birmingham School of Optometry in 1999. She earned her undergraduate degree from Emory & Henry College with a BS in Biology where she graduated cum laude in 1995. During her undergraduate experience she obtained her first internship with her mentor Dr. John Jones of Marion, VA.

From the time of her early childhood she had a fascination with eyes that grew into a passion. She has 18 years of professional experience, 16 years in Greenville and 15 of those as the owner of a private practice.

To complement the science side, Dr. Fishel has an artistic side. She lends her excitement for music to the ECU Friends of Jazz Fundraising Board that culminates in an annual benefit concert whereby proceeds are put toward music scholarships for ECU student musicians. Her talents extend to painting, scrapbooking, and most things crafty. She has a love for animals and lends her time and charity to three local organizations: Pitt Friends, Humane Society of Eastern Carolina, and the Pitt County Animal Shelter.

With her caring heart she also finds time to give back to her community through her membership in Greenville Rotary Club. She provides free eye screening for infants under 12 months via the InfantSEE program as well as qualified adult screenings through Eastern Carolina Optometric Association. Her personal life consists of being the human mom to two dogs, Yukon and Riley. She shares her life with her fiancée, Andrew W. Straub.

Originally, from Baltimore, MD, Towanda made Greenville her home almost twenty years ago and has been in love with this town ever since. This experience has given her the chance to fulfill her passion for helping others by enhancing vision throughout the community. Towanda was formally trained in corporate optometry, but she feels that there is nothing compared to that of private practice. Working with Jennifer Fishel for over sixteen years has helped her get to know local families and watch them grow. In her free time, she has a hobby that borders on obsession: Food, cooking, and cookware! Towanda has a soft spot for animals, as she has two dogs of her own. She enjoys volunteering with the animal rescue organizations in the area. She states that if she had a farm, she would take in as many animals as she could.
